The ESSSE programme - Building a peaceful,
democratic Europe depends very much on the ability of people to understand and
communicate with each other across national and cultural borders. One of the
best ways to prepare young people for the future is by participating in
educational exchanges. This is why the Council of Europe's member States have
agreed to start the ESSSE programme, in which young people can take part in a
planned intercultural experience. Through the European Federation for
Intercultural Learning (EFIL), the European AFS/Intercultural Organisations are
the Council of Europe's partners for the practical implementation of this
programme. Quality is assured based on their proven experience in this field.
Criteria for selection · Parents agree to participation · Successful school
record · Active Involvement in school life · Involvement in organisations or
activities outside of school · Fluency in French or English, or relevant
language for the country concerned · Supporting letter from a teacher in their
school · Candidates submit a curriculum vitae and a two-page explanation
of why they wish to participate in the ESSSE programme. Up-to-date
information about the ESSSE programme and other educational activities of
Council of Europe can be found on the Directorate of Education, Culture and
Sport's Internet site: http://culture.coe.fr/essse School
students, If you are between 16 and 19 years of age you too could spend three
months going to school and living with a host family in another European
country. You will be able to see what life there is really like, make new
friends and learn another European language. Teachers, If you have a
student in your class who you think would benefit from such an experience, then
please draw the ESSSE programme to their attention. Should your student be
selected, you can use the project for the whole class considering the life and
culture of the other country. Please consider the possibility of welcoming a
student from abroad. Both students will be a resource for the classroom.
Parents, Your teenager will be properly prepared for this intercultural
adventure and will receive the benefit of full-time assistance and counseling by
staff and volunteers from EFIL's member organisations. This is to ensure that
your child we will be able to gain the maximum benefit from this exciting
opportunity. Host families are selected carefully. Please also consider the
possibility of hosting an exchange student from another country.
