======= The Network Scholarship Programs (NSP) Department of the Open Society

We want to introduce you an innovative two-year graduate degree program in
International Peace and Conflict Resolution at Arcadia University, located in
suburban Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Master of Arts in International
Peace and Conflict Resolution (MA in IPCR) offers a curriculum that allows
students to develop an area of concentration within the discipline, build an
international network of contacts and gain practical field experience. The
M.A. is founded on a long tradition of both interdisciplinary and international
study programs based at Arcadia University. IPCR takes a multi-disciplinary,
social scientific approach to the
study of conflict. We invite students to look at the concepts of `peace' and `conflict' as observable phenomena in our world today. That is, our program presupposes that conflict is innate in all levels of societal organization and is not, by definition, necessarily bad; it is, in essence, a form of, and ultimately, a catalyst for change. Conflict per se also has certain discernable characteristics; to this extent, it is both predictable and, in the case of potentially volatile conflict, possibly controllable or even avoidable. Conflicts both around the globe and in our own neighborhoods share many of these common denominators. We are beginning to review applications for our Fall 2002 class. Practitioners in the field who wish to further their education are also encouraged to apply. A limited number of partial scholarships are available. Awards are based on financial need and academic achievement. For additional information please consult our web page, www.arcadia.edu/IPCR. Applications are invited for the Master programme in European Studies, beginning in late September 2002 at the Catholic University of Leuven. The Master's program in European Studies was established in 1988 on the initiative of different faculties of the University of Leuven. With the growing importance of the European integration, the program wanted to respond to the need for high-level courses on European affairs. The founders of the program opted to offer a broad set of courses, not limiting its scope to the European Union but allowing students to study at the same time the larger European context, with both its similarities and differences. Drawing on the experience of one decade, the European Studies program has been able to raise the quality of the program continuously. The MA-program in European Studies is an advanced, full-time one-year (two-year for part-time students) study program. As it is primarily oriented towards an international audience of students, the complete program is taught in English. Among other advanced study programs on European affairs, the Leuven program stands out by its interdisciplinary approach. Courses are offered from diverging fields (law, economics, political sciences, history, arts, ethnicity studies). The aim is to approach the European integration process from different angles, combining the insights of different disciplines. This allows students both to study Europe with a broad focus and to deepen their knowledge in a certain field. Eminent specialists, either because of their academic background or because of their prominent role within the European institutions, guarantee the high level and quality of the courses. This interdisciplinary spirit of a program focusing on both the European civilization and on the integration process allows for a critical approach, studying both Europe's unity and its rich diversity, both aspects of integration and of disintegration.
